In 2022, one of the biggest glass ceilings in the electronic
music landscape was broken when Charlotte de Witte
became the first female to close out the main stage of
Tomorrowland. While the honor was long overdue, de
Witte has become one of the most beloved and respected
producers on the planet thanks to her pulsing techno
anthems and incredible branding through her KNTXT label.
Her place at the top of the dance music hierarchy is joined
by fellow producers Rezz and Alison Wonderland, who have
also found top-billing success while crafting their unique
sound and style and staying connected to their ever-
growing legions of fans.

As their success continues to pave the way for the next
generation of female producers and DJs, they are far from
alone in working to overcome the male dominance that
has been so common throughout all music scenes. Looking
back over the past decade to when electronic music broke
through to the mainstream, it is hard to imagine it would
have reached such heights without the female singers
and songwriters who contributed to some of the scene’s
biggest anthems. David Guetta, Calvin Harris, and Zedd are
all mainstays on the biggest stages around the world and
owe much of that success to Sia, Ellie Goulding, and Foxes
respectively.

While the ensuing years continued to see men dominate
the stages, the voices of singers such as Emma Hewitt
and Christina Novelli were key to the sounds that defined
the scene. Their powerful influence has helped usher in a
new generation of vocalists and artists that continue to
influence and define electronic music. Joining the ranks
of Hewitt and Novelli are modern-day legends Haliene,
Linney, and Sarah de Warren, to name a few. The role of the
featured vocalist is being pushed forward, reminding fans
and producers everywhere that they are more than singers,
but also artists and forces to be reckoned with.

Of course, female empowerment and artistry are becoming
more of the norm as a new generation of artists look to
leave their mark on the industry. Producers like Amelie
Lens, Peggy Gou, Jessica Audiffred, and Nora En Pure are all
trailblazing their paths in the electronic music landscape,
producing incredible anthems that are a stark reminder
that gender does not affect musical ability or creativity.
Even more exciting is the variety and genre-bending styles
that are coming from these artists. Whether it be techno,
deep house, dubstep, or some blending of styles, there is a
fearless energy as female artists rightfully earn their place
alongside their male counterparts.
