COVER INTERVIEW > CARL COX AND CHRISTOPHER COE
Looking at the amount of live electronic artists in the
current lineups. Are there too few artists? Is there still a lot of
evangelisation to be done on this side of electronic music?
Explain the picture to us.
Great question, well it’s amazing how many artists are now
starting to come forward and play live, I think audiences
are also finding it more exciting and interesting. During
the pandemic lockdowns globally there were so many live
streams by different artists and people got to really see up
close the difference between DJs and live artists and so I think
have become radically more educated and knowledgeable
about this. Hence I think there has been a marked rise in inter-
est and support for live artists. Having said that, however, it is
still challenging for live artists to find the support they need as
it is quite a different undertaking in terms of production and
set up to host a live electronic artist amongst a bunch of DJs
and there are still some ways to go there.
This is why Carl and I along with our agency Analog have
been working so hard to create events that are majority live
artists around the world. We feel it is, indeed, a fresh move-
ment that is brewing. Indeed Carl is now really committed to
playing live himself and has done a bunch of live and hybrid
shows in recent times and, of course, is releasing his own live
album in September!
The compass of the development of live electronic music
points toward live acts? Is that where innovation lies in your
opinion?
We agree totally, it is now really a hard magnetic north, isn’t it?
Yes, absolutely! Innovation is here and always has been. I
mean Octave One have been doing it since the start, Kraft-
werk before them and so many others. But now the amount
of amazing live electronic and cross-over electronic acts I am
seeing doing amazing stuff is growing so rapidly! And some of
the stuff is mind-blowing!! More women too! I think there is so
much more room for women to be involved in this movement
and there are so many stepping up to the plate here.
