COVER INTERVIEW > ‘20 YEARS: PIG&DAN’ - AN ALBUM, A STORY AND A BRILLIANT CAREER
It is essential for you to produce diverse and original material to use in
your sets. If you had to choose, would you go for music production or
DJing?
If we had to choose between the two, it would be producing music, it’s in
our blood. We breathe and live this from the soul.
What was it like reconnecting with the crowd after the pandemic?
Epic, on so many levels. Unity is the best thing ever! To regain that
feeling of togetherness, and we mean that in its purest form. Everybody
dancing together, with no sign of separation through religion, language,
or race. What a vibe!
You guys have said before that you don’t look at music genres but
at the intensity of the music. Taking a meter, how is the current
intensity?
It’s actually going both ways. If you look at the sound of Afterlife and
Charlotte de Witte, they’re both ends of the spectrum, the opposite
ends. We think the scene is just growing and people are becoming more
accepting musically, which is a very inspiring thing to witness. We also
think that EDM has opened doors for the market to see it’s not just about
ravers but it’s about unity.
Technical perfection and pre-recorded sets versus little glitches
and sets built on the spot. Do you consider that these are the artists’
choices or the result of the demands of modern crowds?
Human error is sexy and real, perfection is far less dynamic. How do you
read a crowd with a pre-planned set? You’re just playing for yourself, in
a way. People come to see you perform and give the best you can. Every
moment and every event it’s different, so the planned set won’t work
perfectly.
How do you define authentic music?
It’s really up to the individual who listens to it to decide whether they
feel it’s authentic. It’s impossible to say, but for us, it’s just about how
it touches you. It’s really hard to say, music can be performed so
differently and the reaction to it it’s very personal.
‘Destination Unknown’, is there going to be a take three?
100% yes
And Pig&Dan’s future, is it as unknown as the destination or can you
whet our appetite?
There’s plenty on the horizon. Nobody has a crystal ball so really it’s very
much a Destination Unknown to us all.
